2nd National Invitational Symposium on Child and Youth Mental Health
November 19th and 20th, 2009 in Ottawa, ON
There is consensus that mental health is essential for our well-being in all settings, and mental, physical and spiritual health all impact each other. The World Health Organization recognizes in particular that child and youth mental health is necessary for the healthy development of communities. As Canada celebrates the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and National Child Day on November 20th, it is fitting to hold the 2nd National Invitational Symposium on Child and Youth Mental Health on November 19th and 20th, 2009 in Ottawa, ON. Canada remains the only G8 country that still requires a national mental health strategy and the Symposium aims to put child and youth mental health at the forefront of the agenda.
The 2nd National Symposium is a next step in the development of national partnerships and linkages. It will build on the existing network of partnerships focused on child and youth mental health, and progress towards identifying the next steps and plans of action that will inform Canada’s new mental health strategy. The Mental Health Commission’s national mental health strategy and Evergreen Framework, as they pertain to the diverse needs of each province and territory, are some of the major topics of discussion. The 2nd National Invitational Symposium on Child and Youth Mental Health is being co-hosted by the Child Welfare League of Canada (CWLC), the Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres, the Canadian Paediatric Society, the Alberta Centre for Child, Youth and Family Research, the National Infant Child and Youth Mental Health Consortium and the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
The Canadian Child & Youth Health Coalition is a proud sponsor of the 2nd National Symposium and supports this important step forward in developing strategies for children and youth.

The Council for Canadian Child Health Research (CCCHR) is pleased to present its first annual trainee symposium, in partnership with the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program (CCHCSP). The symposium will take place on Friday October 16th from 9 am to 12 noon in Halifax at the Westin Nova Scotian. Anyone who is interested in attending is most welcome to do so.
The goal of the symposium is to bring together trainees working in disciplines related to child health and the “omics” – ie. genomics, proteomics, metabolomics etc. – with clinician-scientist trainees through the CCHCSP. Eight trainees from across the country, organized into two panels, will be speaking at the symposium. Their talks will range in focus from cancer to autism through to asthma. In addition, we are delighted to have Dr. John Wilkins, Director Manitoba Centre for Proteomics and Systems Biology as our opening keynote speaker.
